What is Maryland's Broadband Mapping Initiative?
In November 2009, the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA)
awarded the State of Maryland a Broadband Data and Development Program grant. Governor
Martin O'Malley chose the Maryland Broadband Cooperative to lead the project to
collect, validate, and map the service coverage areas and market performance of
every Broadband service provider in the State. The broadband map provides consumers
with up-to-date information about the broadband Internet services available to them.
Goals
- Collect comprehensive, accurate broadband availability data
- Develop and maintain a statewide database of address-level broadband service areas
that can be used for infrastructure planning, economic development, public awareness,
and broadband service marketing
- Develop publicly available, statewide broadband maps
- Contribute Maryland's data to a national broadband map
- Research and analyze broadband demand in different areas of the State
Partners Approach
Maryland's data development and broadband mapping partners are fulfilling the terms
of the grant by building tools that help consumers and businesses obtain access
to broadband, and helps the State's broadband providers sell their services and
products. Consumers and businesses in Maryland's rural areas want and need the speed
and reliability of broadband.
